The History Of Oak Furniture & Why It’s The Most Popular Type Of Wood Furniture In The Home

Despite oak being used for furniture throughout the ages, Oak furniture's most famous period was during the Tudor times and lasted for over 160 years up until around 1650. This period is more commonly known as the ‘age of oak.’ Designs were copied from the characteristics of furniture found in the Catholic churches, and circular characteristics were also added and were often painted with the Tudor rose.. The furniture during this period became larger and more ornate and were seen by many as a sign of wealth.
Oak has always been a popular choice of wood for furniture in the UK, Europe and America, largely due to its availability as a native timber. However, since the turn of the century it’s use has increased year on year and is now becoming more popular in places such as the Far East as a rival to the more traditional pine furniture.
Why is Oak Used For Furniture?
Oak has been used for furniture making for thousands of years, particularly in the UK, and has been gaining popularity worldwide ever since.
Oak has always been the number one choice in the UK, Europe and America, largely due to its availability as a native timber. However, since the turn of the century its use has increased year after year in locations such as the far east. Traditionally, soft woods such as pine were used in such places as they are more readily available, but oak is rapidly becoming a rival.
The Benefits Of Oak Use In Furniture Making
- Availability
Oak trees can grow up to 40 feet in height, the timber yield from each tree is very high compared to other species of trees. Logging is responsibly managed and replanting of oak trees is always maintained. As a result of this oak is never in short supply and is readily available in large amounts.
- Appearance
Oak has a very distinctive golden colour and can complement older and modern design schemes with its clean edges and subtle grains.
- Durability
As a hardwood, oak has a natural strength and longevity and can put up with a lot of wear and compared to other woods. This makes oak one of the best woods for furniture especially in areas where it will see a lot of continued use.
- Longevity
Dure to its durability, oak furniture will very rarely need to be replaced. This is one of the reasons for its popularity over the centuries. Oak furniture lasts a very long time, and this is part of its appeal.
How to Polish Oak Furniture
Oak is a very durable wood, however, it is strongly recommended to dust and polish your oak furniture regularly to prevent any dust particles from causing any long lasting damage. So we here at Kalusto highly recommend using a wax polish to clean your oak furniture as soon as you get it home. This way, you are protecting the wood from the start. You will typically need to repeat the waxing process every two to three months to keep the wood nourished. A tip to avoid any fading of your oak furniture is not to place it in direct sunlight.
It’s a good idea to test the wax you’re going to use on a part of the furniture underneath the table, to check that you are happy with the finish. If you are, apply the wax to the rest of the piece and polish in the same direction as the grain. For everyday cleaning, wipe the surface down with a clean, damp cloth, or use cleaning products specifically designed for hardwoods.
Solid Oak Table Care
To keep your solid oak dining table in tip-top condition firstly start by wiping down your solid wood table with a barely damp microfiber cloth to remove any dust and grime. You never want the water to sit on the wood, so quickly wipe it down with another dry microfiber cloth. For the regular dust a quick wipe-down with a microfiber cloth will do the trick nicely. If your solid oak table has any spots or sticky residue from food, add a drop of dish soap to a microfiber cloth and test a tiny, out-of-sight section of the furniture to ensure that the finish doesn’t get removed. If all is ok, combine a few drops of dish soap with a water cup and gently work on the gummy section. Always avoid soaking the wood in water, and once the spot is cleaned, wipe the area dry with another microfiber cloth. Simple.
